Course Description:
A study of career planning and job
search. This course improves the marketability of students in the work
environment. Topics include self-assessment, interviewing, networking,
employment application, cover letters, resumes, follow up letters, and
career management. Lecture 2.15 quarter hours.
Course
Objectives:
Upon completion of the required assignments,
students should be able to achieve the objectives listed under each of the
following six categories:
1.
Personal Motivation
Identify techniques for enhancing job search and career performance
through positive attitudes and actions.
Apply goal setting, self-talk, and visualization to enhance job search and
career performance.
2.
Internet
Use the Internet for employer research to learn about products and
services, locations, job descriptions, and more.
Use the Internet to obtain current information and guidelines for
conducting a successful job search (resume and cover letter preparation,
cover letters, networking, and more).
Use the Internet to identify relevant job openings.
Use the Internet to obtain salary survey information, to calculate
comparative salaries among various locations and to obtain useful
relocation information.
Use the Internet to obtain information and guidelines for succeeding on
the job and reaching full career potential.
3.
Career Planning
Complete self-exploration to summarize educational background, working
experience, capabilities and accomplishments, skills, interests, values,
and personal qualities.
Apply self-exploration research to the development of a summary of job
qualifications and evaluation of the job target and career goal.
Research career planning resources to identify and/or confirm the career
choice.
4.
Contemporary Issues in
the Workplace
Identify important contemporary workplace issues including globalization,
work quality, working responsibly in a team, and workplace ethics.
5.
Job Search
Organize the job search well to achieve maximum success.
Identify positive and planned action steps to deal effectively with
frustration or rejection often experienced in the job search.
Research application and hiring procedures applicable to the students
targeted job and career.
Consider all possible resources for finding the targeted job.
Research prospective employers, their products, services, reputations, and
achievements.
Identify what the employer looks for most in the hiring process.

Develop a Resume,
Cover Letter, and Application for Employment
Develop an effective resume.
Develop an effective cover letter.
Complete an application for employment accurately and effectively.

Job Search Marketing
and Career Management Tools
Develop a Lifetime Career Database.
Prepare a professionally developed Career Portfolio.

Develop effective interviewing skills.
Identify the differing styles of interviewing used today.
Identify effective methods for getting interviews.
Participate effectively in practice interviews.
Follow up the interview effectively.
Identify sources of job search information.
Arrange and participate in a practice interview.

Success on the Job and
Job/Career Changes
Recognize the importance of lifelong learning to achieving full career
potential.
Identify techniques for adjusting to and succeeding in a new job.
Identify techniques for earning a promotion.
Identify methods for making a job change professionally and successfully.
Identify effective techniques for relocation in a job/career change.
Identify effective techniques for dealing with the problem of being laid
off or terminated from a position.
Information Literacy Project:
All students submit
an
Information Literacy Project
as required by the instructor.

Attendance:
Regular
attendance is expected. If students miss a class, they are responsible
for finding out what they missed. Students should also call the office
(277-1000) to report their absence. If students know in advance that they
will be absent, they should inform their instructor.
