Required Text: Personal Psychology for Life & Work
by Rita K. Baltus (Paperback - September 1998)

Course Description:

An introduction to interpersonal psychology.  Topics include description and analysis of the relationship between culture, group life, social structures, and human behavior.  Emphasis is on interpersonal communication skills, self-concept, motives, values, emotions and perceptions.  Lecture 2.15 quarter hours.

Prerequisite:

Written Communication (ENG100)

 

Course Objectives:      

  • Develop an understanding of human behavior
  • Learn common terminology related to psychology
  • Understand and increase your motivation and be able to motivate others
  • Develop your potential
  • Establish healthy, realistic self-concepts
  • Relate more effectively to others
  • Broaden perspectives, and purposefully direct behavior and development

 

Information Literacy Project:

All students submit an Information Literacy Project as required by the instructor.

Grading:

         Dialogue Participation  and LAs    25%                  A = 90 - 100%

         Information Literacy Project         25%                  B = 80 -   89%

       Daily Quizzes                            25%                  C = 70 -   79%

       Tests                                        25%                  D = 60 -   69%

                                                          100%                  F = Below 60%

 

Attendance:

Regular attendance is expected.  If students miss a class, they are responsible for finding out what they missed.  Students should also call the office (277-1000) to report their absence.  If students know in advance that they will be absent, they should inform their instructor.

4     Emotions, Good and bad aspects

Quiz on Chapters 5 and 6

Behaviorism:  Gaining power over ourselves and others

Midterm posted  

Homework:  Chapters 7 and 8; study for Midterm Exam

 

5    Gender Differences:  Do they matter?

Midterm due.

Homework: Read Chapters 9 and 10.

 

6   Lecture topics:  Creative Visualization, Lucid Dreaming, Writing Therapy
