Course Description:

An introduction to the social influence of psychology.  Topics include: describing and analyzing the development of cognition; the influence of attitudes on social perception; and the powerful social forces that influence behavior.  Lecture 2.15 quarter hours.

 

Course Objectives:

  • ·            Describe how the presence and behavior of other people influences how we think and act

  • ·            Identify factors that influence first impressions

  • ·            Describe the interactions that shape cognitive, social, and emotional development

Information Literacy Project:

All students submit an Information Literacy Project aimed to enhance understanding of the instruments available to access information; and to promote the efficient, ethical, and effective use of that information. The information literacy assignment may be a single assignment or included as a component of a course project.

Grading:

Participation and attendance                    10%                  A = 90 - 100%

Assignments                                          30%                  B = 80 - 89%

Projects                                                 30%                  C = 70 - 79%

Quizzes/Tests                                        30%                  D = 60 - 69%

                                                          100%                  F = below 60%

Attendance:

Regular attendance is expected.  If students miss a class, they are responsible for finding out what they missed.  Students should also call the office (277-1000) to report their absence.  If students know in advance that they will be absent, they should inform their instructor.

Midterm posted  

Homework:  Chapters 7 and 8; study for Midterm Exam

 

5    Problem Solving

Midterm due.

Homework: Read Chapters 9 and 10.

 

6   Coping

Quiz on Chapters 9 and 10

Book assignment 3:

Homework:  Read Chapter 11 and 12.  

 

7   Interpersonal Relationships 

Quiz on Chapters 11 and 12

Homework:  Read Chapter 13.

Homework:  Read Chapter 14 and work on term paper / library project.

Final exam posted.  Key terms and concepts

Information Literacy Project due.

Last Quiz!  Chapter 14

Homework:  Read Chapters 15 and 16 and work on final.

 

10  The Future of Sociology

Final Exam due.
