General Questions:

  1. Why are some links in my web pages not working?
  2. Who is the instructor?
  3. What other web pages do I talk about?
  4. One of my favorite questions: A student goes on a 2 week vacation comes back. Asks: Did I miss anything? Answer: "Yes, two weeks."

As if in a few minutes I could cover what was missed? In a preface to a book you cannot in a few paragraphs say what the book says. Especially if the book is a practice or an exercise -- telling someone jogging is good for you is not the same thing as really jogging each day.

Career Development

Is the main focus of this course to create a perfect resume? No. A main concern will be to insure each student has the ability to create perfect resumes. Having one completed perfect resume will not help if the position you are applying for does not match that one resume! It is the ability to write perfect resumes, business letters, and research career openings that is more important. But we will also discuss lots of aspects of importance to success in a life long career. Students focus on the documents (resume, etc), attitudes and interview techs needed to get them a job in Career Dev. Additionally, ways to develop a successful career are also explored. Other topics include work ethic, appearance/dress and networking.

Here are the goals of this course:

Course Description

An introduction to the theory and practice of writing effective paragraphs and essays.  Additionally, the course provides a review of grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and paragraph development. Students learn the beginning of research and MLA documentation. Students have the opportunity to master a variety of writing modes in a wide range of assignments. Lecture 4.35 quarter hours.

Course Objectives

This course will provide students with basic written communication skills to be effective in a professional setting. This is accomplished by students drafting and editing written assignments in a variety of styles. Emphasis will be on proper grammar, and attention to the norms of particular style modes.

Assume that individuals vary with regard to their writing skills. That being the case, there should be a variety of skills evident in the class. How can the class benefit them all? The physical process of writing is the best way to improve writing skills. As a result, the design of this course is set to give each student an opportunity to spend time writing. There are a range of different types of writing assignments, and even though there is apt to be a divergence of skill levels, each student will have the opportunity to increase their skill by doing these assignments.

The books used for the course are a good investment. Granted that there are on-line resources that duplicate much and even in class the on-line resources are used when computers are available, but computers are not always available and over the course of a lifetime these resources may prove invaluable. My dictionaries and writing guides are old and crumpled but still sit close to my desk for instant access. The exercises in the text book are a great review for those already familiar with the concepts but they are essential for those who are not already fluent or who need practice. We will do some of the exercises in class but for the most part these exercises are homework.

1. Good question Craig! "Bill, I have a question with the answers that this program is giving.

Sources of conflict in collaborative writing include:
A. Gender and cultural differences
B. Cultural codes and communication style
C. Gender codes and communication style
D. All of the Above
E. None of the Above

pages 100-104 would suggest that the answer should be all of the above (D) yet the program says the answer should be (E)?

My answer:

I suspect the problem is that the folks who assembled the code for the page are not even remotely related to the folks that did the book. You are welcome to write the folks on the page that presents the quizzes but I warn you that this may involve work on your part. They will appreciate your help so much they will ask you to help check the rest of the quizzes and before you know it they will have your name and email address and they will ask you to help with other editing as well. They will even offer to pay you for this. Before you know it they will be asking you to edit the book!

Then they might ask you to write one.

There just aren’t that many people out there that notice this kind of thing.

I notice this kind of thing happens with all of these kinds of quizzes on line. I think it is because the people who are the subject matter experts are not the ones who are the web page masters. I would really not like to get in on this one since I am still working on my last contract with Prentice Hall. That one started off the same way I describe above!

Everyone says they would love to write and I suspect the main reason so few publish is because so few take the time to actually write something and send it in!

As far as grading is concerned here is the issue as I see it: you feel like you have the right answer but the web page disagrees. You don’t feel like putting the wrong answer there just to get the quiz correct! So what to do? Submit the quiz anyway even with the answer marked wrong by the computer and include your comment, just as you did. I will consider this sort of thing even more excellent than when you simply send in all the quizzes with a perfect grade. After all, it means you are reading for understanding and getting a lot more out of it.

  1. How does Hinman's web page go with the text? (This was for an older text we no longer use)
  2. Where can I find the quiz questions?
  3. What is the best way to turn in the tests and paper?
  4. When is the term paper due?

How does Hinman's web page go with the text?

The web page Ethics Updates is not designed specifically to go with the text for the course but instead offers additional resources for topics covered in the text. (We used to use the Hinman text for Philosophy of Ethics).

Where can I find the quiz questions?

Each class I will ask one or more quiz questions. You have to be in class to take the quiz. There are no make up quizzes. This is not only my way of encouraging you read the assignments but keep track of attendance. The quiz counts for both.

Why are some links in my web pages not working?

I have been building these pages for years and some of the links no longer work because the site has changed. I try to use sites that are professional, academic and relatively permanent since maintaining them is very time consuming. Also, since many of my pages were originally for a CD the links may still be set incorrectly. For many things Google might be a better bet.

What is the best way to turn in the tests and term paper?

E-mail is best. Please keep a copy of your work in case things get lost in cyberspace. I will reply to your work via e-mail as well and I often include links in my replies. If you use paper links do not work very well. Please note that because of the volume of email I receive and the way my schedule works it may be a day or so before I acknowledge your email and a further few days before I send my comments and a grade. This changes with my schedule from semester to semester and quarter to quarter.

When is the term paper due?

The term paper takes me longer to grade and should be turned in earlier than the due date posted on the syllabus if you can. If everyone waits until the last week to turn in their papers it becomes difficult for me to give them all the kind of feedback I would like to give them.

What other web pages do I talk about?

I have been putting work on the web since 1995 and I have web pages at various places:

My Family Page is: http://pages.prodigy.net/jamisonfamily (This page continues to be available even though I no longer use Prodigy as my ISP. Go figure.

My UAA web page is: http://afwsj.uaa.alaska.edu

The list of links I keep on the web for my use is here.

My Quest is here but note that I am not associated with the pop up adds you may see on this free site.
